7 content marketing tips to increase brand awareness and engagement

Jun 5, 2023 | Marketing

Small businesses often struggle to create and execute an effective content marketing strategy due to limited resources and budget constraints. However, content marketing can be a powerful tool for small businesses to increase brand awareness, drive traffic to their website, and generate leads.

When it comes to content, quality trumps quantity. Simply producing a greater volume of content isn’t enough; it needs to be engaging, valuable, and shareable to make a lasting impact.

In this blog post, we’ll discuss seven effective and actionable content marketing tips that any small business can benefit from. These tips will help you create compelling and shareable content that resonates with your audience.

7 Content Marketing Tips for Small Businesses

1. Define your target audience

The first step in creating a successful content marketing strategy is to define your target audience. To do so, you need to consider factors such as demographics (age, gender, location, income), psychographics (interests, values, lifestyle), and behaviors (online habits, purchasing patterns).

Before creating any content for your brand, you should be able to easily answer the following questions:

  • Who are your ideal customers?
  • What are their pain points and challenges?
  • What type of content do they consume?

Once you have a clear understanding of your target audience, you can create content that resonates with them and addresses their needs. This focused approach allows you to create more relevant and personalized experiences, ultimately driving better results and fostering strong connections with your audience.

2. Define your content pillars

Now that you understand your target audience, your next step is to define 4-5 content pillars for your brand. Your content pillars are the core themes and topics that will guide your content creation efforts. These pillars should align with your brand’s unique mission and values while resonating with your target audience.

For example: The content pillars for a wedding venue could be planning tips, style inspiration, featured vendors, things to do in the area, and case studies of weddings they’ve hosted. Taken together, these topics help to establish the reputation of the brand while also providing value to potential clients.

By defining content pillars, you provide a strategic framework that helps you consistently produce valuable, relevant, and cohesive content that supports your brand’s objectives and engages your target audience.

3. Create a content calendar

Consistency is key when it comes to content marketing. Creating a content calendar will help you stay organized and ensure that you are publishing content regularly, whether that’s once per day or once per month.

Once you’ve defined your core content pillars, creating a content calendar becomes a lot easier. A simple way to organize your topics is to rotate between your pillars at whatever frequency works for you. For example, if you publish one piece of content every weekday, you could assign one content pillar to each day of the week.

Your content calendar should include the topics you will cover, the format of the content (blog post, video, Instagram post, etc.), and the publishing schedule. A great way to organize your content calendar is by using a software like Notion (my personal favorite). This tool allows you to organize your content calendar visually so that you can easily keep track of it all in one place.

Goodbye content overwhelm, hello consistency.

4. Repurpose your content

Let’s be honest: Creating new content can be time-consuming and expensive. Repurposing your existing content can help you save time and reach a wider audience. For example, you can turn a blog post into a video or podcast. You can also break down each long-form piece of content into smaller pieces for social media.

If you’re spending a ton of time creating new content but not taking a bit of extra time to repurpose it, you’re effectively leaving money on the table.

A common fear around repurposing content is that you’ll sound repetitive or annoying to your audience. However, repetition is actually a good thing when it comes to marketing because it strengthens your positioning. In addition, it’s unlikely that someone will see more than one iteration of your content; and if they do, they may not even remember that they already saw it elsewhere.

In sum, repurposing your content is one of the easiest content marketing tips that can save you time and money and help you reach a wider audience.

5. Create engaging visuals

Studies have shown that visual information is not only processed much faster than text, it also results in better retention. Therefore, incorporating visuals such as images, videos, and infographics into your content can make it more appealing and engaging.

To create engaging visuals, start by understanding the purpose and context of your content to determine which types of visuals would best complement and amplify your message. For example, creating infographics for your blog posts is a great way to condense complex information into a simple, visual format. Infographics also perform well on Pinterest, which can help drive more traffic to your blog.

Additionally, ensure that your visuals are optimized for different platforms and devices to ensure a seamless user experience. By creating engaging visuals, you not only enhance the visual appeal of your content but also improve its shareability, engagement, and overall effectiveness in conveying your message.

6. Promote your content

Creating great content is only half the battle. You also need to promote it to ensure that it reaches your target audience.

Fortunately, there are many ways to drive traffic to your content. And you don’t need to do all of them in order to see results.

Here are a few effective ways to promote your content:

  • Send newsletters with links to your content (whether it’s on your blog, podcast, social media, etc.)
  • Incorporate SEO (search engine optimization) to drive free, organic traffic to your site
  • Cross-post your content on other platforms, such as LinkedIn, Facebook, and Medium

Another strategy is to collaborate with other businesses in your industry to cross-promote each other’s content. This can be a powerful way to leverage another brand’s reputation and audience to increase your visibility. Just be sure to offer an equal exchange of value, especially if the other brand is more established than yours.

7. Measure your results

Measuring your content marketing results is crucial for understanding the effectiveness of your efforts and making data-driven decisions to optimize your strategy.

Start by defining clear and specific goals that align with your overall marketing objectives. These goals can include increasing website traffic, generating leads, improving brand awareness, or driving conversions.

Next, identify key performance indicators (KPIs) that align with each goal, such as page views, time on page, click-through rates, conversion rates, or social media engagement. Utilize analytics tools like Google Analytics, social media insights, or marketing automation platforms to track and analyze these metrics. Regularly monitor and evaluate your results, comparing them against your goals and identifying trends and patterns.

By measuring your content marketing results, you can gain valuable insights into what’s working and what needs improvement, allowing you to refine your strategy, optimize your content, and ultimately achieve better outcomes for your brand.

Summary

In conclusion, content marketing can be a powerful tool for small businesses to increase brand awareness and drive traffic to their website. By implementing the content marketing tips outlined above, you can create a successful content marketing strategy that helps you achieve your business goals.
