How long does it take to create a new website?

Jan 6, 2023 | Web Design

Creating a new website can be a daunting task, and it’s natural to wonder how long it will take to complete. The answer, unfortunately, is not a straightforward one, as there are many factors that can influence the length of time it takes to create a new website.

In this post, we’ll break down some of the main factors that influence how long it takes to create a new website. This should give you a better idea of the approximate timeline to expect for your situation.

The more complex, the longer it takes

One of the main factors that can impact the timeline for creating a new website is the complexity of the site. A simple website with just a few pages and minimal features will likely take less time to build than a more complex site with multiple pages, custom functionality, and integrations with other systems.

Some examples of common elements that can make a site more complex include a blog or podcast feed, a shopping cart, an appointment scheduler, and a membership or course integration. Generally, any element that requires integration with other systems will add a layer of complexity to the site.

Another factor to consider is the complexity of the design itself. Custom design elements, such as illustrations, can add several weeks to the project timeline. Additional elements such as animations and interactive effects will also add time for implementation, testing, and refinement.

A clear vision upfront saves time

Another factor that can influence the timeline is the amount of planning that goes into it upfront. If you have a clear vision for how you want your site to look and function, it will be easier to bring it to life. However, if you’re not sure exactly what you want or need, it could take longer to finalize the design, content, and functionality of your site.

It might sound counterintuitive to add a week or two of strategy work before beginning the design process if you’re on a tight timeline, but it will likely save you time once everything is said and done. Getting clear on your vision before starting on design helps you stay focused throughout the process and reduces the number of revisions needed.

I always conduct prep work before kicking off a new website project for my clients, whether we’re working together on a one-day intensive or months-long custom project. This important planning stage ensures we’re on the same page regarding the goals, vision, and expectations for the project.

How you build your site affects how long it takes

The tools and resources you have available can also impact the timeline for creating a new website. If you have a team of designers, developers, and content creators working on the site, it will likely be completed more quickly than if you’re working alone. Similarly, if you have access to advanced website-building tools and resources, you may be able to complete the site more efficiently.

Here are some examples of advanced tools I personally use to design and build websites quickly and efficiently for my clients:

  • Adobe XD for creating design mockups and interactive prototypes
  • Divi, a premium WordPress theme, for building custom, responsive sites with minimal coding
  • Shopify is my go-to platform for e-commerce websites; it’s user-friendly and doesn’t require coding

A no-brainer way to speed up your timeline for creating a new website is to use a template. There are templates available for every platform out there, whether you prefer WordPress, Squarespace, Shopify, Showit, or something else. The downside to using a template is that it won’t be completely unique to your brand unless you take the time or hire a designer like myself to heavily customize it.

So, how long does it take to create a new website?

In general, it’s difficult to give a precise timeline for creating a new website, as every project is unique. However, a rough estimate for a simple website might be anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks, while a more complex site could take several months or even a full year to complete. Ultimately, the length of time it takes to create a new website will depend on the specific needs and goals of your project.
